“We The People”, Are All Chained. How Katy Perry is jump starting Politics in Pop Radio.

This is why  Katy Perry is more important than ever in U.S. media right now.

Our Teenage dream, California girl, Is twisting a song about being socially blinded with a catchy as hell pop chorus.

I heard the song in pieces. Starting with the chorus “Turn it up it’s you favorite song..” on a loop. Katy’s marketing team scattered a handful of disco balls chained to different landmarks around the world, repeatedly playing the catchy chorus only . All you needed was your own headphones and plug yourself in.

When I heard it through the disco ball at Capitol records, I figured “Oh this is typical Pop-Perry.” Another fun radio directed song.

The next day she released the full song

I looked back and thought to myself why didn’t I notice the most important (and my favorite) “We Think We’re Free, Drink! This one’s on me. We’re All chained…” lyrics. I wasn’t fully aware when I was trying to listen, a couple distractions around me, her marketing team was speaking to me while I was trying to get immersed in the music, and my meter was close to expiring.

But when I heard it and saw the accompanying Lyric video with “Mr. Persons”, immediately knew how important it would be. “Mr. Persons” the hamster endlessly wasting his time eating and obsessing over television in the comfort of his little cookie cutter house.

This is still a pop song.

This is still created for the masses, to get drawn in by the dancing beats, and head-bopping chorus.

BUT

This is important to the message.

She is attracting the audience, yes with this dance tune, but attaching truth-punches.

With the catchy chorus and a profile as big as Katy Perry. Radio will have no choice but to play over traffic hour, online, and just about anywhere mass media can reach. Along with this catchy chorus brings our troubles being exemplified all over the world. Look how suppressive and blind we are. It was careless actions that led us to where we are right now. If we cared enough to go out and vote or get educated before we did , how things would have been different.

There are hundreds of songs probably out there right now about our current circumstances as a country but how often do we hear them on the radio, or stumble across them online?

Our radio waves have no choice but play the revolution over and over to the land of the lost.

“We gotta see it to believe it.” We need to hear it too. If music continues to be about how simple everyday tasks such as going to the club or falling in love for the 30th time, it begins to lose its meaning. Music has been very strong and political in our past during times of crisis, and there couldn’t be a better time for this new  era of “Poplitics”

I am so happy I am in able to be school right now when our politics, and society are a mess to keep myself educated. As well as have music and media like this, to double it’s effects.

This is the now.

This is the history we are living.

Its scary but I couldn’t be happier to be alive during such an important time.

It is the time to burst our bubbles, and march with our rose colored glasses on and #Persist #Resist #Inspire.
